John McKearney joined Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services in 1980 and served in several divisions including as deputy fire chief, Emergency Services for five years. John was appointed fire chief and general manager by Mayor and Council on July 21, 2009. Chief McKearney sits as a member of the Corporate Management Team, responsible for managing the City.
In addition to his fire service career, Chief McKearney has been very involved with the community and other professional activities. John served as a cabinet leader with the Lower Mainland United Way for five years and currently sits as a board member with both the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) and Fire Chiefs' Association of British Columbia (FCABC). John has provided strong leadership with the Fire Commissioner's Diversity Taskforce.
Chief McKearney obtained a master's degree in leadership from Royal Roads University in 2010, and achieved the chief fire officer (CFO) designation from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs in 2011. Chief McKearney completed the Senior Fellowship Fire Executive Program at Harvard University in 2011.
